MODES

Two ways to play, one deep scoring engine

Every word in the pool can be played two ways — from a blank slate, or from a scrambled rack of tiles — across four difficulty settings, with a scoring system precise enough to reward genuine spelling skill over guesswork.

Mode 01

Blank Letter Mode

Spell from scratch — no tiles to lean on.

  • Every word starts with a short clue — its meaning or definition — shown for free; that's what tells you what to spell.
  • You're given an empty run of letter slots and must type the full spelling yourself.
  • The hardest, most rewarding mode — pays 3 points per correct letter.
  • A Solver can reveal one letter at a time if you're stuck, at an escalating point cost.
  • Streak bonuses here are the richest in the game (see table below).
Mode 02

Scrambled Letter Mode

Arrange a jumbled rack of tiles into the word.

  • Same free clue as Blank Letter Mode — the word's meaning is shown up front — plus every letter you need is right there on the rack.
  • All the correct letters are shown, scrambled — you tap or arrange them into order.
  • Real‑time coloured tile feedback shows correct placements as you build the word.
  • Slightly gentler scoring — 2 points per correct letter — great for warm‑ups.
  • Faster‑paced and ideal for new players finding their footing in the word pool.

In both modes, the clue is free and automatic — you're never asked to spell a word with nothing to go on. Want more than the short clue? Reveal the full definition plus a worked example sentence for a small point cost (see "Full Word Detail" below).

⏱ Session & Per‑Question Timers

Play untimed, on one whole‑game clock, or race a per‑question timer (10–90 seconds, or Unlimited for relaxed practice).

🏁 Tournament Practice Mode

A length‑aware clock — short words get a flat floor, longer words earn extra seconds per letter plus a banked‑time bonus carried over from fast answers. No entry fee, nothing at stake — pure competition-paced practice.

🔥 Streak Bonuses

Five correct spellings in a row triggers a bonus that compounds with every further streak — reward for consistency, not just single lucky words.

🎯 Adaptive Difficulty

The word pool quietly gets harder or easier in real time, tracking your recent accuracy so the challenge always sits right at your edge.

🔊 Spoken Pronunciation

Every word can be read aloud via text‑to‑speech, at a small point cost that scales with how often you lean on it.

📖 Full Word Detail

Every word already comes with a free clue to its meaning — that's how you know what to spell. Want more? Reveal the full definition plus a worked example sentence for a cost proportional to the word's length; the example never spoils the live answer.

HEALTH

The case for playing daily

Word games aren't just entertainment — a growing body of research links regular vocabulary and spelling activity to healthier cognitive aging.

01

Neuroplasticity in action

Learning and recalling words engages the brain's ability to reorganise itself and build new neural pathways — the same mechanism that underlies recovery and adaptation throughout life, not just in childhood.

02

A multi‑decade signal from crossword players

The long‑running Bronx Aging Study found that people who regularly worked crossword‑style word puzzles saw the onset of measurable memory decline delayed by roughly two and a half years compared with non‑puzzlers.

03

A pooled analysis of two million people

A combined review of 38 large studies — covering more than two million adults — found intellectually engaging leisure activities, including word games and puzzles, associated with roughly a 23% lower dementia risk.

04

Benefits even after decline has started

Research on adults with mild cognitive impairment found that those who kept up regular word games and similar mentally active hobbies showed better memory, attention and processing speed than peers who didn't.

05

Delayed onset in the oldest players

A 2021 study following adults aged 80 and over found that high levels of cognitive activity — reading, games, puzzles, letter‑writing — were linked to Alzheimer's onset arriving roughly five years later.

🧠 Why spelling specifically?

Spelling asks more of the brain than simply recognising a word — it demands active recall of exact letter sequences, meaning, and usage all at once, drawing on memory, language and attention networks together. Spell-The-Word's Blank Letter mode leans directly into that active‑recall effort, while Scrambled Letter mode adds a visual‑spatial reasoning layer on top.

Playing in short, regular sessions — a few words a day, most days of the week — is the pattern researchers most consistently associate with benefit, which maps neatly onto a daily Word‑of‑the‑Day habit.

This section summarises publicly available research for general education and is not medical advice. Word games are one piece of a healthy‑aging picture that also includes exercise, sleep, nutrition and social connection — if you have concerns about memory or cognitive health, please speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

MISSION

Designed to help fund Nigeria's media memory

Beyond the game, Spell-The-Word is being built with a deliberate second purpose tied to Nigeria's media history — a commitment we're setting out now, ahead of launch.

"Digitising and creating text-searchable archives of existing collections of old and aged editions of major Nigerian newspapers will cost millions of dollars per title, and most of Nigeria's oldest titles, some approaching eighty years old, simply cannot afford the cost alone."

  • Once the app is generating revenue, a portion of proceeds is planned to go toward funding digital archiving projects for Nigerian newspapers and magazines whose decades of print history remain undigitised.
  • Longer term, the project aims to support the creation of lasting digital media‑archiving institutions across Africa, so records documented by Africans are not lost to time as publishing moves from analogue to digital.
  • It's intended as a continuation of a challenge first raised over a decade ago: find creative, self‑sustaining ways to fund the preservation of Nigeria's press history for the AI era, where undigitised records risk being invisible altogether.
